Texas Book Festival 2008

It's fall! Texas Book Festival time is approaching.
Nov 1st and Nov 2nd to be exact. Each year Jim and I start planning our trip to Austin in September and October.

(Have you been to another Book Fair or Festival and would like to share your experiences and a picture?)

We go to the Texas Book Festival web site and start looking at the authors who will be attending.

There are always a great number of authors attending so it takes a while to determine what books to take along and which we need to buy on the internet or look for in the used book stores.

For those of you thinking about attending the Festival:

  • The weather is usually cool (50-60s) in the morning - take a light jacket - but it warms up during the day (70-80s)

  • We like to park about a block west of Lavaca Street between 12th and 13th streets to be near the book signing tents

  • We usually stay at the Drury Inn or Holiday Inn - these are north of the capitol area on I-35 near highway 290

  • We eat lunch at the Festival which serves Texas delights such as corn dogs, sausage on a stick, roasted ears of corn, etc.

  • At night there are a number of Bar-B-Q, TexMex and other restaurants to choose from

  • After dinner we always head out to Book People, an independent book store or one of three Half Price Book Stores
  • That's our plan this year - subject to change of course.

This will be our 11th straight year attending the Book Festival. We attend in order to:

  • Get books we have in our collections signed.

  • Buy and get new books we don't have signed.

  • Attend the talks and panels of the authors that take place in the Capitol Building on Saturday and Sunday
  • This year as we look at the list of authors, there's several we know who have attended many times before. Such as Texas mystery authors:

    Rick Riordan
    Joe Lansdale
    David Liss

    And history writer:

    H. W. Brands

Another famous and currently hot mystery writer who hasn't been before is

    Chrisopher Reich

These are all award winning authors who have written a number of books.

Other authors of interst to us are authors with new debut books. These are

    Kathleen Kent
    Doug Dorst
    Randa Jarrar

A few other authors that will be there that we're researching are:

    William Least Heat Moon
    T. Boone Pickens
    Dolph Briscoe
    Douglas Brinkley
    Andre Dubus III
    R. L. Stine
    Richard Price
    Mary Volcansek
    Sarah Bird
