Pulitzer Prize for Fiction
The Pulitzer Prize is named after Joseph Pulitzer. He was born in Hungary in 1847, emigrated to the US and served in the Civil War.
He began working at a newspaper in St. Louis and eventually owned the St. Louis Post-Dispatch and then the New York World. He became known for his hard-hitting editorials and competition with William Randolph Hearst.
The Prize for Fiction and prizes for other categories are presented each year at a luncheon at Columbia University. Usually in April.
