National Book Awards
The National Book Awards began back in 1950. Awards have been given in different categories over the years. Currently there are awards for: - Fiction - Non-Fiction - Poetry - Young People's Literature
James Jones won the Fiction award in 1952 for From Here to Eternity.
Selection Process
Only publishers can nominate books that are published between Dec. 1st and Nov. 30th. The award is for American citizens and the book must be published in the U.S.
Five finalists are selected for the "short-list" for each category in mid-October. The awards are presented in November.
The shortlist for the 2009 awards was announced on Oct. 14th.
