Texas Book Festival Authors of Literature and Fiction
We arrived at the Book Festival on Sunday at 11:00 AM. We started off by attending a discussion group of literature and fiction ... entitled "Stretching Exercises - How I Became Someone Else in My Fiction".
There were four authors being interviewed in this discussion: Wesley Stace Clifford Chase Darryl Wimberley Kim Powers
The first author of literature and fiction was Wesley Stace. He is a British author, now living in the US.
He brought the principle character ... or protagonist of his book with him. A ventriloquist's dummy!
The dummy has actually been in his family for many years. So it's not too surprising he wrote a story about it. By George is about a dummy named George ... and also a boy named George.
Mr. Stace's first book Misfortune was a nominee for the Tiptree Award.
The next author was Clifford Chase to talk about his book Winkie. The book is about a Teddy Bear ... who comes to life ... and jumps out the window.
Some reviewers have compared Winkie to The Velveteen Rabbit though this book would definitely be for adults.
This is Mr. Chase's first book. Jim bought this book before the Festival to be signed after the talks.
Darryl Wimberley wrote King of Colored Town. He narrated it through a female high school student.
It is a book about integration in the '60s.
He has previously written literature and fiction books - mystery books. He has a mystery series set in Florida.
Kim Powers was the next author in the group. His book is Capote in Kansas: A Ghost Story. A ficionalized story of Truman Capote and Harper Lee researching the family killed in Kansas in written about In Cold Blood.
His first book, a memoir, was The History of Swimming.
