First Hardcover Edition Books We've Collected in 2008
In 2008, we've collected several first hardcover edition books that we think have a good chance of appreciating in price over the next few years. Joseph O'Neill's recently published first hardcover edition book Netherland is on the longlist for the Man Booker Prize. The book was our August Collectible Book of the Month pick. The Story of Edgar Sawtelle by David Wroblewski has been on the best seller charts for several weeks. It's now a very collectible book especially if signed. The first printing was reportedly 26,000 copies. The book has been reprinted at least 12 times and sales are over 300,000 ... making this a very successful book for Mr. Wroblewski. Also, Mr. Wroblewski's first hardcover edition book is now an Oprah Book Club pick. But books with the Oprah sticker have second state dustjackets. The books themselves are first printings if they have a 1 in the numberline. (I have seen several with a full numberline). But the dustjacket will make them less valuable. Getting one of these signed though would greatly help the value! Child 44 by UK author Tom Rob Smith began selling in the US in late April. It was nominated for the John Creasey Memorial/New Blood Dagger award for Best First Novel (but did not win). It did recently win the CWA Steel Dagger for Best Thriller. Junot Diaz's second book, The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao has won not one but two major literature awards ... The National Book Critics Circle Award and the Pulitzer Prize. Prices have risen sharply since February. Patrick Rothfuss's first hardcover edition book The Name of the Wind is the first of a series of at least three. The book has won the Quill Award for best science fiction and fantasy award. It was also nominated for the Locus Best First Fantasy Novel. It narrowly missed in the voting to Joe Hill's Heart Shaped Box to come in second. No other books were close to these in the final vote tally. Other books we've been buying are award winners that we've missed over the past few years.
