Edgar Awards
The Edgar awards are given by the Mystery Writers of America. They were first given in 1946. These mystery book awards are named after Edgar Allen Poe - a well-known writer of mystery and horror in the mid 19th century. Mr. Poe developed most of the key elements of the detective story in the 1840s.
As many as 1,000 books are considered for the award.
According to the rules, mystery books must be published in 2008 to be eligible for the 2009 award.
Foreign authors are eligible for Best Novel award ... but only US writers can be given the Best First Novel award.
