Book Collecting Books

There are a number of book collecting books that can be helpful to beginning and advanced book collectors:

Identifying First Editions:

Jim suggests the following three books for help in identifying first editions:

Pocket Guide to Identification of First Editions by Bill McBride

-- small size allows you to take it with you when your out at the book stores

First Editions: A Guide to Identification by Edward Zempel

Points of View: A Compendium of Points of Issue by 19th and 20th Century Authors by Bill McBride

-- this book lists the various "points" (slight differences in words or errors in the first run of books ... the errors were caught and changed before the first printing was complete) in older books

Books for the Beginning Collector:

ABC for Book Collectors by John Carter (1952)

-- considered by some book collectors to be required reading!

Book Finds by Ian Ellis (2006) 3rd edition

-- I still refer to my 1996 1st edition copy of this book

Among the Gently Mad: Strategies and Perspectives for the Book-Hunter in the 21st Century by Nicolas Basbanes (2002)

-- You'll want to read at least one of Nicolas Basbanes books on book collecting

Instant Expert: Collecting Books by Matthew Budman(2004)

Book Collecting Magazines:

Firsts

-- highly recommended! Jim claims he bought the first issue when it came out in 1991

Bookmarks

-- I found this magazine only last year but it has been published for several years
